Edwin is happiest when he is leading the way, and I am happiest when I am outside and moving, so yesterday was a very good day for both of us.
With Chris and Maxine out of town from Thursday afternoon to Sunday night, Edwin and I have a lot of free time on our hands, and I wanted to be sure to claim some of his while I had the chance. I suggested a bike ride to Georgetown, bribing him with coffee and pastries (confession: I wanted to check out some sales). He had a different plan, and once I handed him the reins, things went beautifully.
We walked to the Pentagon City Metro and rode up to Woodley Park (he is a master at navigating the Metro, knowing exactly where to transfer). We then walked down to Adams Morgan to get brunch at Tryst. When we came upon Madam’s Organ, hazy, smoke-filled memories flooded my brain, mixed with flashes from Heaven and Hell Nightclub just a few blocks down. Who knew then that 25 years later, I would be in that same area getting a cortado and fresh herb bagel with my teenage son?
Edwin graciously agreed to work Georgetown into our adventure, so we set off on the next leg. He led us down green, leafy, elegant streets, past the mini version of Rome’s Spanish Steps and up past a smattering of embassies, like Latvia and Cypress. Every now and then, he would absentmindedly hold my hand, and I had to stop myself from squeezing too tight (he had been talking about going to school in the Netherlands – so far away!).
We eventually wound our way down to M Street in Georgetown. He patiently waited while I tried on clothes and got a great deal on two tops. Score one for me!
As we walked over the Key Bridge to the Rosslyn Metro stop, I gleefully declared we had walked over five miles and might even hit six by the time we got home! He nonchalantly shrugged, satisfied that the excursion had mostly been in his hands.
