We arrived at Chris’s parents’ lake house in Connestee Falls a little after midnight Thursday night. I hadn’t slept well the night before and had finally gotten out of bed in surrender at 5:00 AM Thursday morning. After a rowing workout, I raced through final packing and readying the house and cats for our weekend away before leaving for work.
It was a good day at work; it was my second run at the lesson I had prepared, which always makes for a smoother day. After leaving an online meeting around 2:45 and throwing my things in my bag, I rushed out to jump in the truck with Chris, pick up Max from school, and begin our journey to Brevard, NC.
It was a mediocre night of sleep the first night here, followed by another late night. Edwin’s flight from Richmond was delayed, and he ended up arriving at the Asheville airport, which is 40 minutes away, just before midnight last night.
I was running on fumes by the time I collapsed into bed. I slept until 9 AM. This is huge. I don’t think I’ve slept past 7:30 AM in over 25 years. I woke up ready to take on the world.
And how did I take on the world today? I paddle boarded, swam, and mostly sat in the sun all day long. The highlight was watching the kids play a game where you lean backwards over the water, prevented from falling by holding onto one side a fishing net, while your loving sibling holds onto the other side…that is, until you can’t sing the next line or two of the song when it’s paused. If you flub, loving sibling lets go of the net. I was the DJ, and I derived immense pleasure from watching them take turns dropping each other into the water (or diplomatically refraining from doing so) for about a half hour.
It’s great to see them together, falling back into a comfortable and playful banter after Edwin’s first short stint away at school. We only have one more full day at the lake, so I’m going to savor it.
